Advancing research literacy in Therapeutic Recreation: Spotlight on Student Knowledge Translation

1 CEUs | 60 mins.

This course aims to advance research literacy in TR. Each year, select 4th year students
in the University of Lethbridge’s Bachelor of TR program are invited to submit a
presentation to be included as a session in the Research and Innovation courses in the
TRCoE. These presentations showcase their ability to critically appraise recently
published studies in the field of TR that may have a direct and meaningful impact on the
delivery of TR services in the continuing care sector. In this spotlight, participants will
learn about innovative interventions including: 1) The impact of choral singing on a
sense of agency and meaning for people with dementia, 2) The impact of sensory
garden interventions on agitation and quality of life for people with dementia, and 3) The
impact of aquatic therapy on balance in older adults. The focus of each presentation is
transferring new knowledge into ones’ daily TR practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will understand how to best translate knowledge derived from a study examining how choral singing can impact a sense of agency and meaning for people with dementia.
  2. Participants will understand how to best translate knowledge derived from a study examining the use of sensory gardens for people with dementia.
  3. Participants will understand how to best translate knowledge derived from a study examining the impact of aquatic therapy on balance in older adults.
